After Detox

So you have completed your detox at Poinciana. Congratulations! Now it’s time to recover. Detox can be hard but some will say that quitting is the easy part. Staying stopped and living a complete happy and sober lifestyle is the hard part. After your detox you will be completely sober and will have to deal with a lot of things. Most addicts have hurt their families, been in trouble with the law, have financial problems and many other issues which in sobriety become glaringly clear. In order for you to maintain your sobriety and not return to where you were you will need to get help and continue your recovery after detox.

The good news is that people do recover and they do it all the time. There are many methods and you and your doctor or counselor will go over your situation and develop a plan based on your needs. Read on to find out a little about what comes next.

12 step meetings

The twelve steps is a very effective method of quitting using drugs or alcohol. You have undoubtedly heard of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. You will most certainly be recommended or even required to attend these meetings for a period of time after you complete detox. These meetings are comprised of groups of people all of whom are in recovery from the disease of addiction. They all have quit using utilizing the twelve steps and want to help you do the same. AA/NA meetings and recovery can be a very fun and enlightening experience and the camaraderie and strength and hope you find at these meetings will help you stay drug and alcohol free.

Outpatient Rehabilitation

Outpatient drug or alcohol recovery programs can be either intensive or unintensive. Outpatient programs are usually done in your home town or city. You will stay at home and live and work as usual but you will go to a counseling program in the evening anywhere from once a week for less intense programs to 3-6 times a week for intensive outpatient. Generally you will be assigned a licensed addiction counselor and will participate in a variety of activities from group therapy, to individual counseling, family therapy and/or 12 step meetings. Outpatient programs can vary in duration from a few weeks to a few years depending on your level of success and what you and your counselor feel will work best to keep you sober happy and successful. Outpatient programs can be found in your local phonebook, on the internet or through your state and local health services.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

When you are recommended to Inpatient Rehabilitation this usually refers to programs which are medically based, that is there is a resident physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, or nurse on staff. Inpatient substance abuse programs last 14 days to six weeks on average, though this time frame will vary patient to patient and between programs. Inpatient rehab is most useful for people who need additional medical attention after their detox. Mental health, physical disability or poor physical condition are some situations where you may be referred to a hospital based program.

Residential Treatment

Residential treatment refers to a program where you live 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a period of time after detox. These centers are the most recommended for people who need intensive help to stay clean, which is generally the case if you have become physically dependant on drugs or alcohol.

Residential treatment programs can be found throughout the country and last any where from 2-8 weeks sometimes much longer depending on your needs. During your stay at residential treatment you will be in a sober, supportive environment surrounded by people who have been where you are. You will work on a program that will aim to keep your drug free for a life time and you will have the time and access to resources and people with experience with the disease of addiction to help you through the process.

Most residential treatment programs are 12 step based, because that has proven to be the most effective program for permanent sobriety. Not all programs are 12 step based however. There are religion based treatment programs, psychological treatment, and a variety of other options which you can discuss with your counselor at Poinciana.

This is the “short list” a general overview of what you will need to do after your detox to stay sober. You and the compassionate and helpful staff at Poinciana will come up with a plan that works for you.
