Family Intervention

Interventions, including family and executive intervention.

You may have come to our website looking to help a loved one with an alcohol or drug addiction. Although you have found the best place to help them through what can be painful and serious withdrawal problems, they must of course be a willing participant. This is no easy task. You have tried reasoning with them. You have tried logic, threats, and ultimatums. You have said how much you and your family care. You have explained the medical and financial implications of their substance abuse. You are strained, feeling exhausted and hopeless.

A Family Intervention may be the solution you need. This is a delicate and difficult undertaking requiring a trained interventionist to ensure the success of your efforts. Your interventionist will help you make a timeline to the day of the intervention. The timeline can vary from a weekend to a few weeks depending on the urgency of the problem and the preparation time.

Initially the interventionist will meet with family members who are going to be involved, either by phone or appointment, and discuss the disease of addiction with each family member. Treatment options will be discussed as well as determining who needs to participate in the intervention. Having a treatment plan in place before the intervention is essential. Finally after the plan is developed a final practice session usually takes place the day before the intervention.

The Day of the Intervention

The family member is confronted at a place determined in the initial planning sessions by the intervention leader. Safety and order are assured and the intervention begins. Family members each state how the addict’s actions are affecting them, how much they care and what they want in the future. Then the man or woman is asked in no uncertain terms to accept the help that is being offered. With support and compassion the individual realizes that his addiction is no secret and he can no longer live the way he has been living and accepts the help. Then the treatment process moves forward and the family and individual pursue their treatment options discussed in the initial consultations.

Although this is an example of a family intervention, each situation has its own unique challenges. A certified interventionist who you feel comfortable with will help you come to the right conclusions for your situation.
