Narcotic Detox

Narcotic- The medical definition of a narcotic is “A drug derived from opium or opium like compounds, with potent analgesic effects associated with significant alteration of mood and behavior, and with the potential for dependence and tolerance following repeated administration.” (http://www.answers.com/narcotic&r=67, June, 2007)

Narcotics can also be a blanket term which is often used in U.S. Law Enforcement and Drug Classification which refers to any illegal drug, especially addictive ones. Cocaine and it’s other stimulant cousins are classified as narcotics in the U.S. Controlled Substances Act (CSA), although cocaine is not chemically a narcotic. Marijuana is not a narcotic either though many Law Enforcement agencies refer to it as such. This distinction between what is and is not a narcotic is important because opiates and their derivatives can be extremely physically addictive, where other drugs do not cause a dependency in the body’s systems.

Narcotics come in many varieties and most have medical benefit. The only narcotic which is considered to have no medical use is heroin. Medical professionals usually refer to narcotics by their more specific and accurate name of opioids or opiates. Opiates are considered “analgesics” or in lay man’s terms pain relievers. Without potent narcotics given in proper dosage and under medical supervision doctors could not perform surgery or help alleviate pains caused by medical conditions, injuries or medical interventions. Some common narcotics include Oxycontin, Vicodin, Morphine, Percoset, and hydrocodone. Though these types of drugs produce enormous benefit for people they are often abused by people using them to get high.

Repeated and long term use of narcotics can cause severe physical addiction. Physical addiction has many symptoms which we have discussed on our opiate detox page.
